In addition to the printables
that can be used for any
country study, I make
additional sheets for specific
countries ~ mapping activities
and flag notebooking sheets
{and sometimes more!}.

Our studies of Africa include units on the following
countries:
- Egypt
- Kenya
- Morocco
- Nigeria
- South Africa
- Tanzania
Below I have included links to the printables for each
country as well as links for our favorite books and
resources, along with blog posts that provide some
great websites to help you in your study of that
country.
We took three weeks to study the country of Egypt and focused quite a bit
on mummies and pyramids. Egypt is such a HUGE country to study with
amazing history that could last for an entire year, and we only tapped into a
little bit of what we could have. Our study included mummifying apples,
making doll mummies and working on a small lapbook of things we had
learned. The last two weeks we primarily used used the Magic Tree House
Mummies and Pyramids guide by Mary Pope Osborne.

We have friends who visited South Africa a few years ago, so the girls
remembered hearing about some of the different places that they had
visited and also seeing pictures of their trip ~ making this a fun country to
review and study.
Along the way we learned that South Africa is bigger than Texas and
California combined, practiced a little Zulu, got confused with the three
different capitals {Cape Town, Pretoria, and Bloemfontein}, and discovered
that South Africa actually has another country within its borders {Lesotho}.

Our travels to the Eastern coast of Africa started with Kenya. We learned all
about the Great Rift Valley and the heights of Mt. Kilimanjaro, figured out
how to sing the chorus of Jesus Loves Me in Swahili, drew lots of fun
pictures of safari animals, put together a fun diorama of a savannah, read
some great books together, and visited some great websites to learn more
about the great country.
A favorite book for our 2nd and 3rd grader was Lions at Lunchtime by
Marie Pope Osborne.

Morocco was one of the countries that was 'lighter' for us, but it was nice to
have a little bit of a break. We used the time to focus on several geography
terms ~ strait {Strait of Gibraltar}, desert, mountains, coast, plateau, plain,
valley. We also talked about the government in Morocco, read some great
books about the country and made a very simple dish as our meal from
Morocco.
A favorite book for our studies was The Butter Man.

Tanzania was a pit stop in our country travels. I was working on another
unit and we decided to add this one onto our travel route.
We studied about Tanzania after we finished up our unit on Kenya since
they are both in eastern Africa. Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa
and also has the tallest mountain ~ Mt. Kilimanjaro. For our study we
started with the book We All Went on Safari by Laurie Krebs looked more at
the Maasai culture, learned about Mt. Kilimanjaro, tried to speak a little
Swahili, and just had fun exploring a little more of Africa!

We were excited to study about Nigeria, knowing that the Compassion child
that we support lives very close by to Nigeria. We had two favorite books
for this unit ~ Master Man: A Tall Tale of Nigeria and also The Village of
Round and Square Houses. Our youngest three really enjoyed the first
book and our oldest focused more on the second, which actually takes
place in the neighboring country of Cameroon. We had fun trying to
recreate a round house similar to one someone might live in the Central
Africa region.
