In addition to the printables
that can be used for any
country study, I make
additional sheets for specific
countries ~ mapping activities
and flag notebooking sheets
{and sometimes more!}.

Our studies of Europe included units on the following
countries:

  • France
  • Germany
  • Great Britain
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Russia {also part of Asia}
  • Spain

Below I have included links to the printables for each
country as well as links for our favorite books and
resources, along with blog posts that provide our
weekly study schedule and some great websites to
help you in your study of that country.
While studying France we had to include two main things ~ the Eiffel Tower
and Monet. The bulk of our first week was spent learning about the country
itself: geographic features, the flag, working on mapping projects, and also
reading
The Little Prince.

Our second week we spent time making recreations of Monet's painting and
working on more hands-on projects like a miniature version of the Eiffel
Tower. We also learned how to count to 10 in French and found some great
videos on YouTube {in the blog posts below}.

My mom is from the Netherlands and was living with us while we did our
unit on that country. One of the main people we focused on was Corrie Ten
Boom, because my mom was one of her secretaries in the early 70's ~ lots
of information from her! :)

Our other studies involved making windmills, learning a Dutch prayer,
talking about tulips, imitating a painting by Van Gogh, and having some
Dutch treats ~ Gouda cheese and making Olliebollen.

Our study of Germany followed our study of the Netherlands. We continued
our reading about Corrie Ten Boom since her story takes place during WW2
and felt that it all tied in together.

In addition to our mapping and flag projects, we went on a 'spy adventure'
called "The Bummer in Berlin" from Highlights Magazine. The adventure
took us a week to complete and during our game we learned a lot about
Germany and some fun little tidbits about the country {see my week 2 post
below for more details}.

Our unit on Great Britain took us 4 weeks to complete since we squeezed in
TWO lapbook studies ~ one on Peter Rabbit and the other {our favorite} on
thought they were one and the same (in case you were wondering, they
aren't). We covered a little bit of everything from Beatrix Potter to
Shakespeare to knights ~ you name it!

Italy is definitely a country that we could spend a lot of time studying ~
ancient Rome, Roman empire... We chose to focus on a few key things: the
artists Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto and Michaelangelo and then took some
virtual tours of ancient Rome and Pompeii. Laying on the floor underneath
our table to paint like Michaelangelo was fun ~ but messy!

We also looked at the Colosseum and the geographical features of Italy as
well as read some fun {and fabulous books}.

During our unit on Spain we learned about Picasso and cubism. The girls
enjoyed creating their own Picasso-like art projects featuring some pretty
abstract faces. We talked about MANY different Spanish explorers: Ponce de
Leon, Cortez, and Magellan ~ and even though he wasn't from Spain, we
talked about Columbus {they did fund his trip!}. We read the book
The
Story of Ferdinand
far too many times and had much fun watching the
Running of the Bulls on YouTube. We wrapped up our unit by making some
pico de gallo {yum!!}.

Russia was in our study of Asia and the beginning of our study of Europe,
since the country is partly on both continents. We spent time listening to a
lot of classical music, learned about ballet, took some virtual tours of the
country, studied the various geographical features, currency...and so much
more!
